The famous Seven Coloured earth of Mauritius is the result of molten lava cooling at different rates due to inconsistent temperatures and forming oxides of various metals including iron and aluminium. The colours become more or less distinct as light hits it from different angles at different times of the day. And what is more fascinating is the fact that if you mix the colored earth together, they'll eventually settle into separate layers. And you may also be puzzled as the colors might play tricks on you and may appear to be shadows. When you visit the Seven Coloured Earth in Chamarel, be sure to stop along the way to see the spectacular Chamarel Waterfall. Falling about 100m, its the highest of all the beautiful waterfalls in Mauritius. It has an amazing viewing point & is well worth the stop. .
Yes, its a Paradise Island. Mark Twain said it all: “Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.”
The ‘Seven Coloured Earth’ of the village of Chamarel is an incredible natural phenomenon and a popular tourist attraction of Mauritius. It is a pretty small area consisting simply of a bare landscape of strikingly coloured earth located within a dense forest. The earth was created by volcanic rocks which cooled at different temperatures and thus resulted in a range of colours. The rocks turned into sand of a rainbow of colours with seven distinct shades visible. The seven colours are approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow but will change depending on the time of day and the weather. Over the years rain has carved beautiful patterns into the exposed earth creating an unusual landscape of colourful rolling sand dunes.
