This is a special post. One I wouldn’t typically share but decided to to honor the guy in the frame. @smitherene is someone I have known for about a year now, but only recently has become one of my best friends. As we sat upon this Rio Grande overlook (that he scouted) and watched the sun rise- life stood still. It’s in these far away lands that you can sometimes find nothing but peace in the moment. He turns 22 today and as if that’s any reason to go check out his page, wait till you see his portraits. He is quickly becoming recognized by some of the greatest in the industry and will be in high demand within the year. Keep on keepin on Smith- it’s an honor to know ya.
I don’t walk him, he walks me..Especially on route to the dog park. Also, not an ad for @underarmourca Also, also, winter is here. It’s cold and these gloves don’t really work. K, bye. ✌🏻#
Whenever I see a cassowary, the Jurassic Park theme tune starts to play in my head💃🏻
These prehistoric-looking birds are even cooler in real life than they look in photos. There's something very humbling about being in the presence of a big chicken which could easily kill you if it wanted to 😆
The bony structure on their head is called a casque. It's sheathed in keratin, the same material which makes our fingernails! Scientists don't know for certain exactly what the casque is for, but there are quite a few theories floating around. Some say that the casque helps them to push through the undergrowth 🌲🌳. Others think the casque is used to help cassowaries pick a suitable mate 😍 Some scientists believe it may also help to amplify the sounds the cassowaries produce, enabling them to communicate more effectively 🗣
