Mid Dome is a prominent mountain in the northern Southland region that overlooks the township of Five Rivers and the Waimea Plain. It rises to a height of 1,478 metres (4,849 ft). Mid Dome stands above the upper reaches of the Mataura River, some 7 km south of the township of Athol.
🌲🌲🌲 Lodgepole pines (pinus contorta) were planted on 250ha of Mid Dome between the 1950s and 1980s for erosion control, and have since spread to threaten over 100,000 hectares. Boffa Miskell manages the Mid Dome Wilding Trees Control Programme on behalf of the Trust; and works with stakeholders including local Iwi and landowners, LINZ, DOC, Environment Southland and MPI. 🌲🌲🌲 At the request of our biosecurity contractors, a 'Turk' hut has been helicoptered in, so the biosecurity contractors no longer have to "commute" to work each day. They stay in this glorious landscape during the week, doing their vital work on the ground, and head home at the weekend. Read more here: https://bit.ly/2R57d0l
