The Tainos were the Indigenous people of Jamaica of South American origin, that lived peacefully and harmoniously for hundreds of years.
You know, until Christopher Columbus “discovered” them in 1494: i.e. tortured them, forced them into labour, and exposed them to European diseases to which they had little or no resistance. It seemed they had all been wiped off the face of the earth.
Until the English arrived in 1655, and they met the rural farmers that spoke a dialect that was a mixture of Spanish, Taino and African languages.
The remaining Taino had escaped into the mountains and secretly lived with the African “Maroons” resistance group for years.
Aspects of Taino culture have survived in the language, medicines, and fashion of Jamaica showing that the Taino were not in fact extinct like the Spaniards believed.
After years of inter marriages between the Africans and Europeans, the Taino people’s legacy lives on with mixed Taino communities sprouting up in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic to this day. .
Rediscovering Our Roots is about telling the stories of resilience of our ancestors. About honouring their legacies and keeping them alive in our world today.
It is about recognizing our shared experiences across cultures and standing together in solidarity.
Resist, Rebel, Re-Root, Live On. We are in this together.
. *Note* if you are Jamaican or descended from any of these people and believe I have not done the history justice, please educate me and make me a better voice for all POC. Thank you all so much.
