He has worked as an assistant director on several films, series and television programmes, including Mohammad Malas’s Ladder to Damascus (2013). SheCAN: Talking to Leslie Harris, director of Just Another Girl on the IRT
In 2018 Cinema Rediscovered screened the cult classic film Just Another Girl on the IRT made over 25 years ago by the #femaleDirector Leslie Harris who wrote, directed, produced Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. as an independent feature through her production company (Truth 24 FPS Inc.) which sold the feature to Miramax, a first for a theatrical film by an African-American woman. The film premiered at Sundance in 1993, where Harris became the first African-American female writer, director, producer to win a Special Jury Prize for Best #Feature#Film. Made on a budget of $130,000, Harris’ film follows Chantel, a smart, articulate black high school student, determined not to become ‘just another girl on the I.R.T’ (the NYC subway train). 25 years on, Leslie Harris reflected: “It’s still a challenge for black women as writers, directors and producers. Yes, today we have Ava DuVernay and Dee Rees and that’s progress, but it’s not enough. Audiences are still missing out on many wonderful stories by #blackwomen filmmakers. Financing is still a challenge, including for me making my current feature ‘I Love Cinema’. 25 years ago when I picked up my #Sundance Prize, I said “… it’s time to see the independent vision of #AfricanAmerican women both in front of and behind the #camera”. 25 years later, I say it again. The time is now.” www.alt-africa.com @cineredis#SheCan#Brooklyn#NYC@britishfilminstitute
Flashback Friday ⚡️⚡️
Stuck in the Amazon 😳
On a bus full of Bolivian men and women. The women in traditional Quechuan dress with bowler hats and full colourful skirts filled the bus. They were all so beautiful.
The bus we’d been on for what seemed liked days. And by bus, I don’t mean air conditioned and complete with toilet facilities. I mean a bus that had very few windows that closed, or windows at all and basic bench seats.
The bus stopped as the traffic banked up on the road, which was highly unusual - after all we were in the Amazon on a dirt road. Everyone stepped off the bus to find the side of the mountain had slid away taking the dirt road with it.
We stayed on that road for 3 days until the military had arrived to build a new road - it was a long 3 days.
Bolivian women from other villages came and set up camp on either side of the mud slide, we needed food. They cooked with the water from the mountain run off, which also became our drinking water. .
Needless to say, I was one very sick girl as we approached civilisation again....
And don’t laugh at my hair, it was growing out from a no. 1 and I know I look like a baby monkey.. 🐵 .
