Champagne. Au milieu des vignes. Always on the way...
I have always loved these little moments of solitude, to find myself alone to walk in the vineyards, this taste pronounced for freedom. Since my childhood in Bordeaux, I have always kept and maintained this link with the land and the vine. With these men and women who have always worked hard these poor lands to get the best out of them. In Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion, Pauillac, or even further, in Chablis or here, in the middle of the hilly Champagne vineyard are my true roots.

@louisroederer was stablished in 1776, and it was inherited and renamed by Louis Roederer in 1833. Some years later, Champagne started to gain popularity by the Russian nobility and Louis Roederer became a prestigious name.
The most prestigious label of the House, Cristal, was first created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia. As the political situation in Russia at the time of his rule was very unstable, the Tsar feared assassination attempts. So in order to enjoy his beloved Cristal Champagne in peace and without any fear, he ordered that Champagne bottles be made clear, so that he could prevent hiding a bomb beneath the bubbles, as it could happen with a classic dark green bottle. So Louis Roederer commissioned a Flemish glassmaker to create a clear lead glass bottle with a flat bottom, hence the name Cristal.
Of course the wine had to be outstanding, so the Champagne House started to source only estate grown grapes from the oldest vines, in order to master every stage of the winemaking production. This practice wasn’t common at the time, as most Champagne Houses used to buy their grapes. Cristal was not commercially available until 1945. The House has remained an independent, family-owned company and is now managed by Jean-Claude’s son, Frédéric Rouzaud, who represents the seventh generation of the family. #drinkstories
